We Plant Trees We Will Not Live to Sit Under.
The trust guards the village’s water bodies and plants seasonal fruit trees around them — native species, chosen for what they give in which month, not for how fast they grow.
The fruit of the season carries the medicine of the season.
The Body Was Meant to Eat What the Month Gives It.
Mango in summer, jackfruit in the rains, guava as the year cools. Bharath worked out a long time ago that the fruit arriving in a given month is the fruit the body needs in that month — the water content, the fibre, the heat or cooling it carries.
A supermarket erases the month entirely. Everything is available all year, which sounds like abundance and is actually the loss of a calendar the body still runs on.
We plant for the month, not for the yield. A tree that fruits once a year at the right time is doing its whole job.
A Fruit Tree Feeds Everyone It Cannot See.
Nobody guards these trees and nothing is fenced. Village children eat from them, birds take what they take, and travellers passing through stop where there is shade.
That is the entire design. A thing planted without a gate around it is the clearest teaching available about what seva means, and children understand it faster than any explanation of it.
You cannot own a tree once it is fruiting. You can only have planted it.
The Lakes Came First, and They Are Still the Fragile Part.
Shivapura’s water bodies are cleared, watched through the dry months, and defended from the ordinary slow encroachment that takes a village lake without anyone deciding to.
A lake is harder to explain than a cow and harder to photograph than a tree, which is exactly why it is usually the thing that gets lost.

A Child Learns Patience From a Tree, Not From Being Told About It.
Children who come to the Gurukula are taken to the lakes and to the planting. Not as an excursion, and not with a worksheet afterwards. They dig, they water, and they are told the truthful thing: this will fruit in about seven years, and you will be an adult.
There is no shorter route to teaching a ten-year-old that some work does not pay out to the person who does it.
The goshala teaches service. The trees teach time. Neither one can be taught in a classroom.
A Sapling Costs Very Little. Seven Years of Watching It Costs More.
Planting is the cheap part. What the trust carries is the years afterwards — watering through the dry months, replacing what does not take, keeping the lakes clear.
